Best Potatoes for London clay soil

looking for advice on the best potatoes to use for clay soil

I would go for a new potato, pentland javelin don’t seem to mind heavy clay.

Grew Charlotte as a second early and King Edward as a main crop as well this year and weren’t impressed with their performance, although I’m sure being super hot didn’t help despite our best efforts in watering them although the javelins did okay still.

I've had good results with pink fir. this year was rubbish, I presume due to the drought.

Pentland Javelin and Desiree, grow well in clay. Both a bit smaller than usual this year, but still a usable crop - when other varieties really weren't worth digging...

Most potatoes will grow on clay soil. Does depend on how heavy. I tend to look at flavour, size and uses along with disease resistance - Blight. Black Leg etc.

I like a dry fluffy mash, or a dry backed potato so go for Records, Kerrs Pink

For a dependable potato - Maris - Bared, Peer, Piper (Early, Second, Main) but all very same ish.

Desiree - I've never been a great fan - but looking at JBA - Susceptible to potato cyst nematode and mis-shapes on heavy soils - Medium dry (so not ideal for chips and crisps)

Best Advice, look at a potato seed site - JBA - Good general information - Others have more detail on diseases etc.

I prefer my potatoes on the waxy side rather than the dry/floury and both of my choices make nice mash, chips and baking pots according to my tastebuds

thanks for the advice - all useful - there are so many to choose from but will definitely try some you have mentioned

I grew Sarpo Miro on really heavy clay in North West, but for the blight resistance. Got good yields compared to the other plotholders, but tend to go to mush in the pot if you're not on top of it.
