Hello friends

I've managed to get an allotment (half plot of 5 rods) after about 2 years. I've done some gardening (backyard) but nothing as big as an allotment. It requires a clean up and a bit concerned with the shadow the tree will cast. Any advice?

Anyway, what do you want to grow? What have you grown in the past. Nice time to get a plot. You can start sowing inmodules and hopefully you'll have some areas for planting when your young plants are ready to go in.

Hello and welcome, royalspud. Not a lot you can do with a tree except prune it or remove it, but you may not want or be able to do either of those. If you like lettuce, they like a shady spot in summer, so you could prove successful with those.

I was hoping to show you all the state of the plot. I've inherited a plot that needs alot of clean up - a broken down shed full of rubbish and lots of twigs and branches from the fig tree on the plot

I've grown tomatoes, potatoes and corn in the past. I tried squash and pumpkin but didn't succeed.

I'm hoping to grow sweet potatoes, beetroot, kale/spinach and some berries.

A good idea, however won't that take long to rot? Unless a get a wood chipper

The biggest problem with that tree is it will suck all the moisture and nutrients out of the ground, it really ought to go, are you allowed bonfires? that would help clear the ground and add some potash at the same time.

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to remove it. No bornfires but I can use an oil drum/incinerator.

Is the tree that casts shade - the fig tree or something different? Evergreen or deciduous?
If its a fruit tree you may not want to remove it.
Think of a tree as the gnomon (good word that) on a sundial. As the sun moves around, so does the tree shadow. You just need to work out how the shadow moves and work with it.

I was told it's a fig tree by the allotment manager.

A fig tree needs pruning to stay productive. If its on your plot you may need to do some selective thinning out of branches to open it up.
