Nice to have you along, Gareth. Once you've made a few more posts you'll be able to post some pics of your plot, so we can all have a nosey. There are lots of friendly and experienced allotmenteers on here, so fire away with any questions you have.
Plants and seeds are pretty forgiving things, as they want to grow. If you can stop other things from eating them you may get to enjoy some home-grown produce yourself :-)
Jokes aside....welcome to the Vine
We're always happy to offer advice and we're very nosy
What advice you choose to take is up to you...we'll offer what we find works for us, but all our soil conditions/microclimates/time available /space will make a different to what we suggest.
It's an exciting time for you...bet you keep grinning to yourself?

the only thing I'd say that is important to start now is start a compost heap with any vegetable peelings, tealeaves, coffee grounds, grass-clippings etc (no cooked stuff and no meat or dairy), any prunings, grass-cuttings etc, as you can never have too much compost.
I have been busy already. I have made 4 beds for a rotation which involved removing large amounts of bind weed roots and three lawless fruit trees.
I have split and moved a rhubarb crown to another area. Garlic from Wilko is in and seemingly doing well.
I have tamed about 2/3 of a half plot.
My only regret so far is not taking a photo of what it was like when I took it on.
