  • Hello from North Cumbria

    Evening everyone

Newbie here, to the forum and to the art of vegetable production.. although I'm from generations of keen gardeners... I've never had the time since I was a enthusiast young grower with my parents and grandpa.

I'm in North Cumbria in the shadows of the north pennines and reasonably high up so I realise things are against my gardening but hey ho will have a go.

We have a large plot and a poly tunnel on order to help have a reasonable length growing season as it will be short otherwise.

If there is anyone on from this area I would love to know what you recommend trying, I know its gonna be trial and error and a steep learning curve!

    I'll stop rambling on, cheers

    Becca

Hello Becca welcome to the vine!! I think try growing everything you like to eat, some things will need a lot of support from the wind, some plants trail over the ground,a lot should be able to grow. Do you have some seeds you’re thinking about sowing because it’s worth a try
              Location : Essex

Thanks for the welcome, where in the shires? I'm born and bred in Bucks! My parents grow all sorts there!

I've got tomatoes, cucumber, courgettes and squashes of various varieties growing inside at present. My plot is still under grass but hopefully we are going to clear, plough and rotavate the area this week and then rabbit fence it so I have a blank canvas! All a bit late but lambing has been chaos.

                    Cheers for the hello...

I'm just growing tomatoes, cucumber, squashes and courgettes, couple varieties of each inside at present. Hoping to have an array of veg, salad, fruit and herbs once we get our teeth into it!

                      Thanks for the welcome Jane.

That is my thoughts really (well my OHs anyway, he knows nothing about gardening and is ever the optimist) I'll just plant stuff and see what grows, a steep learning curve.

I have plenty of seeds, from kitchen garden magazine over last 18 months and I asked for seeds for christmas and birthday.... I've even received some French bean and perpetual spinach seed in the post for Easter from my mum as not going to see them for chocolate eggs.

Welcome to the vine Becca, look forward to hearing your news. Good luck with your lambing. My neighbours here in Kildare are all finished with lambing at this stage, all the lambs are running about with the ewes and some adoptee parents.

230m to 600m give or take
One of my many student jobs was working at a trekking centre/sheep farm in West Wales and I remember the joys of riding down from the hills, bringing back new born lambs (usually half of twins) tucked inside my jumper. The jumper never recovered but the lambs thrived!
                          Enjoy the Vine!

Hello and welcome from 500 m (but at the bottom of a valley) and much further south still.

Cumbria is a beautiful part of the country. Seeds sound like a really good Easter present.

Hope you have a great growing year.
