been here for a while but not posted much, and thought, you know, i really should be polite and introduce myself..
M'name's kethry (online name), been gardening for a couple years now. I live in Manchester with my OH and the dog in a small ground floor flat. We have a small L-shaped garden, with 4 trees and 2 tree stumps in it which makes gardening challenging at the best of times! Most of what i'm growing is fruit and veg, but i've room for some flowers, i like to pick them for the house, and i don't believe in buying flowers that have been flown thousands of miles.
one side of the L faces south, the other side faces east, and is very shadowed by both the house and trees. Nevertheless i'm gonna try to grow veg in the side garden this year too. once i've got the garden sorted and i'm happy i can keep up with it, i may look into getting an allotment.
A lot of the reasons behind me gardening, apart from a love of it, stem from being something of a cook: i grow what i like to eat and cook, and i also try to grow unusual or expensive to buy things. The exception to that is stuff that i make for presents. for example, i'm growing shallots this year from sets, so that i can make pickled onions at christmas (a task i've taken over from my aunt, who sadly died a year ago), they're a family tradition and as she grew her own, i'd like to too. I come from a pair of gardening families - Grandpa grew a lot of his own fruit and veg (albeit he had a bigger garden than i have now!) and my grandmother on the other side still grows her own tomatoes in the greenhouse every year.
I write a blog: from the gardening exploits through to other things i do - like knitting, sewing, cooking, etc., through to photos of the local scenery, banging on a bit about the environment and so on. if anyone wants to read it, the address is on my profile (not sure what the rules are about generally putting that kind of thing in here so playing it safe).
any questions, yell!
