Hi Everyone,
I'm Sue and I'm new. I'm also confused! I've spent the last few days reading through the threads and trying to research the things I want to grow, but as soon as I think I've got it sorted in my head I read some conflicting advice!
This morning I've put some baby carrot seeds in a large wooden trough in an unheated greenhouse, in a mixture of topsoil and sand, is this the right thing to do?
I've also started some brussel sprouts and aubergines in a heated propagator and some peas in pots with plastic lids on the window sill.
Any feedback and advice gratefully recieved and appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the vine. Your carrots sound like they will be fine but won't grow very long in a trough unless it is deep. Brussels should be okay just in the greenhouse - better not in the heated prop or they might get too tall too quickly. Aubergines will be fine in the propagator. good luck with it all.

sounds fine to me, you will always get conflicting advice but the fun is in experimenting and finding what works for you.
where are you gardening?

You get conflicting advice because there is usually more than one way to do things. Also, depending on where people live in the country and whether or not they have a heated greenhouse or just a garden for things to go into, some will say it's the right time to sow such & such whereas others will say it's far too soon. Much though some people would like to convince you otherwise, gardening is not an exact science and people, over the years, tend to do what works for them. In my opinion the main thing is to ENJOY it! If you put your location on your user profile (green box, top left) you are more likely to get advice suitable to your location. Have fun and relax about it.

I'd agree with Shirley, brussels should be ok without the heated propogator, otherwise it all sounds fine

Worry not! I would recommend starting a journal of some sort and recording what happens - then you can refer back to it over the coming years (because you WILL get the bug!) My first year was very experimental and resulted in not much produce but lots of lessons learned.

I know it all seems confusing right now but don't be afraid to ask questions - we all had to start somewhere and you get so much good advice and support on here :-)

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and advise. Funnily enough everdream78, I bought a gardening journal in Sainsburys at the weekend and have started recording in it today.
The trough that my carrots are in Shirl is about a foot deep, specially bought for the occasion, will this be deep enough?
I've taken the brussels out of the propagator and will put them in the greenhouse in the morning, do they need a plastic lid or anything?
