Went to the Lottie today chap on next plot had rescued my plastic cold frame as it had blown away !!! Another chap came over and told me i had planted my broad beans too far apart stood talking for too long and didn't really do anything. I only want to grow veg etc not get into the rights and wrongs after all its only a bit of fun. Don't really like the chap but I'm far too polite to ignore him.

I had this trouble for a while - my advice is to let them talk, make the odd noise ('aha, mmmm, really?' etc) and carry on with what you're doing. No need to actually stop working.

Some people love to tell you how they would have done it better, but they're usually harmless! There are exceptions though - if he makes a real pest of himself just say 'look, I really must get on!'

You get this all the time. Most people (?) are genuinely trying to help you. Always answer with 'why do you say that?' and see what he says.
Your broadies will still grow, but if they were closer together they would help each other to stand upright not get blown over.
Conversely, if you plant too closely, they compete with each other for food, light, water. And pests and disease can jump from one plant to another.
            It's a tricky old business.

I'm polite, but becoming less tolerant of whingers and complainers who tag onto newbies in order to convert them to their own way of thinking. On my new plot I am stuck between two old hands who hate each other. I get earache off both sides about t'other, but just nod and go 'hmmm' in the right places. You can even walk away and they will just carry on talking ...

you could always try "oh really i would love for you to show me" you either get your lottie done for you or they run a mile and dont pester you anymore .
I'd rather regret the things i've done than regret not doing them at all.
