Hi everyone!
Have been looking for a gardening forum for a few weeks now and have to say this one looks the business!
I'm Gary, I'm 42 and now live in the little village of Balmullo which is close to the Golfing center of the universe, St Andrews. I'm originally from Dundee, but don't hold that against me...!
I'm about to embark on a whole new chapter in my life when my girlfriend (and soon to be wife) moves in with me once all that tedious imigration stuff is all sorted out. She currently lives in Rhode Island in the USA, but don't hold that against her...! .
One of the things we are both very keen on attempting, is growing as much of our own vegetables (and fruit) as possible. We would also like to keep a couple of chickens (Rhode Island Reds of course!) and recycle as much as we can. Whilst still a long way from ever being self-sufficient (I'll still be collecting a helluva lot of clubcard points from Tesco for the time being), we both feel this is the way to go and the thought of chowing down (see how American-ised she's gone an' gotten me?) to a meal largely prepared from our own toil, is something we are both looking forward to with eager anticipation!
The thing is, we've never done this sort of thing before. This is the first time I've had a garden that could be used for produce and so to say we are both inexperienced, is to say the least. The phrase 'learning curve' springs to mind.
But the challenge we will both take on with relish (and quite possibly the first meal will too!) and so expect me to post threads asking what, to most of you, will be the most basic and elemetary things you can imagine. It's the flat end of the spade you put in the ground, isn't it...?
So looking forward to sharing many tips and hints (and for 'sharing' read 'borrowing') with you all over the coming eons. Happy days are here again!
