  • Hi from Cambridge

Hi all! My name's Anne, and I live on the outskirts of Cambridge. I only have a small garden, but about eighteen months ago I managed to get a 3-pole plot on the local allotments, and I've been an avid reader of GYO ever since. Not sure why I haven't joined the forum before now - anyway I thought the new season would be a good time to pick up some tips and advice

Welcome! Ask away. We're generally friendly.

The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

I think a pole, a rod and a perch are all the same animal. 5.5 yards.

Does that sound about right Eyren, welcome to GYO anyway

A pole is 5.5 yards, or about 5m, but in allotment terms a "pole" is actually a square pole, which is about 30 sq yards or 25 sq m. A standard ten-pole plot is 30ft x 100ft.

          Thus, my 3-pole plot is about 30ft x 30ft or 10m x 10m - plenty big enough for a beginner
