Hello from an enthusiastic but newbie grower

Hello there
I have just found this forum whilst frittering away an hour or so on the computer its fab. I have every intention this year to finally get my veg patch up and running. I have so far grown some broad beans in little pots awaiting the snow/hail etc to pass. I want to maintain the organic nature of my garden but have been sorely tempted to totally nuke the slugs and snails in my garden !! Has anyone got some fail safe methods apart from raiding hubbies beer stash to control them ????

Welcome to the vine! I'm sure you'll fritter away even more time as the seasons go on! This old grapevine can be a bit addictive!

As for slugs and snails I go out at night with a torch, collect them all up and then throw them into my "green waste" recycling bin or if i'm feeling very hateful I squash them or drop them down the drain!

I also collect slugs and snails in the evening put them in a bucket and put salt on them so they don't come back.

Welcome Newbieveggie. Yes the slugs and snails are a problem to be dealt with. I think we all try to be as organic as we can be but dealing with the slugs has to be effective. I confess I use the blue pellets but I put them on little plastic trays so they can't leech into the ground and cover them over so other critters can't get them and dispose of the corpses so birds don't eat them. It works for me.
If you think your ground is polluted with them you can do a nuking before you plant anything. Scatter the pellets and cover with fleece or something and get rid of a fair few before you start. Good luck and keep us posted.
