    Hi Lancs-lad & welcome.

You sound as if you'll know what you're talking about if you've come from a small holding. Was it local or have you moved a long way?

My OH & I live just south of Preston (near Longton) and have an allotment in Penwortham, 3 miles away. We've had it exactly 1 year & as it hadn't been touched for about 7 years before that it's been quite a challenge! We do seem to be getting somewhere now though - well worth the effort.

Welcome to the vine GForster. Why not try some Pak Choi. Very quick and dead easy. And they'll do well in a container while your getting ground ready. Good luck with the project.

Pak choi sounds fun, eaten it loads but never thought of growing it !

I have never seen any seeds for it, is it a specialist thing or will the local garden centre sell me some ?

I don't want to ask on seed swap yet as I have nothing to really swap (except my body and that isn't really worth a pak choi seed )

We had our smallholding for 26 years in Pleasington, between Blackburn & Preston. At 200ft ASL we had a great view of the coast from Southport to the lakes. The downside, as far as growing veg, was the unceasing winds. I did grow quite a lot of tender stuff in the polytunnel. I am looking forward to reading some interesting posts on this site as I will have plenty of spare time due to the reduced workload.

Gforster - we got some pak choi seeds from some plants my OH's dad gave us last year. No idea if they will grow true?? I'll ask my OH if you can have a few if you like?

Lancaster Lad with a much smaller plot you should have it perfect this year!

You can buy Pak Choi seed anywhere GForster and it comes in lots of varieties. If you PM your address I'll send you a few seeds for Mei Quing Choi, White Canton and Red Choi. They should all do well for you in containers while you get the ground ready.

I'm sure it'll be fine - there are loads of tiny seeds in there so I'm sure we can spare you some. PM me you address, no need to swop in return - I'm sure you'll return the favour sometime when we need something.

Where did you get your polytunnel from?

I built the tunnel myself . All it cost was the polythene. Construction was - aluminium 2" angle side posts with water pipe for the arches and a lengh of steel pipe for the ridge.
The arches were fixed to the ridge piping.
