Hi from Kent

Hi everyone!

Just joined the forum, although i'm an occasional lurker.

We've just embarked upon veg growing! We've got 3 veg plots - 2 in the back garden which we've dug over and are planning to plant beans, peas, sprouts, broccoli, cabbage etc in...

And one that's sort of tacked onto the side of the stables at the end of the drive, which was already here when we moved in. It's already got 3 BIG rhubarbs on it, and a gooseberry bush.

We've also got a greenhouse in the back garden that we're planning on growing toms, cucumbers, peppers etc in

I expect we'll be needing lots of advice and tips along the way... get ready for the mountain of questions lol

Hi Beki, and Novice. Welcome from another "Maid Of Kent". How are you both getting on with sowings? I've got a few things germinating under fleece, but still haven't sown carrots. Worried its still too cold, but will probably sow on next sunny day. Itchy Fingers

I'm from Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey So not far from you at all!

I used to live in Ashford (beaver road), i go shopping in Maidstone, and my sister lives in Folkestone which isn't far from Dover, so i've got something in common with all of you! lol

As for seedlings - we've had a MAJOR disaster with them today!!! I didn't have anything big enough to transplant all my broccoli, brussel sprout and leek seedlings into, so i nicked the kids turtle sandpit a couple of weeks ago and transplanted them all into there.

But we were forecast bad weather and frosts, and my greenhouse had a few panes missing due to the storm, so i put it on my upstairs landing (all 138 seedlings lol).

DD comes running down the stairs this afternoon laughing her head off saying "mummy you're going to be sooooo mad!" so i ran upstairs, and the dog (1 year old chocolate labrador called coco) had scratched all the compost - and SEEDLINGS!!! - out of the sandpit and was laying smack bang in the middle of it looking all cosy!!!!!

I could have killed her! LOL

I did see the funny side... although still haven't 'faced the music' and gone upstairs to clean up... will do that in an hour or so i think... or let OH do it hehehe

So now i have to start from scratch!!!

I've still got 8 broad beans planted out, 16 cabbage planted out (although something has eaten 3 of them!!!), 37 sweetcorn on the windowsill - which are about 3-8 inches tall now!, 8 more broad bean plants on the windwsill which will be hardened off over the next week then planted out i think.

A whole seed tray of basil, which i have no idea what i'm going to do with! lol

5 pumkin plants, which in a month or so will be planted on the dung heap and hope for the best. 2 cucumber plants which i've got to pot on tomorrow, along with 6 pepper plants.

I've also got too many celeriac on the go... i have no idea where they're going... i got rather enthuisiastic!!! LOL

What are you all doing, seed/plant-wise at the moment, as the weather is roughly the same wherever in kent you go...

Sorry about the seedlings, unfortunately I'm not growing any of those this year, otherwise I could have passed some across the Swale!

I'm not sure whether to give up on that and just grow direct or not.... think i might give it one more try!

Welcome to the forum. I'm from Kent too, although I only have a small patio I managed to grow quite a bit in my first year last year.

Sorry to hear about your naughty Labrador (destroying seedlings), sow some more seeds, we still got plenty of time .

OMG, I'd have been gutted, pity you didn't get a piccie of him looking all cosy in the middle of your seedlings At the moment I've got shallots, garlic, globe artichokes, spring onions and potatoes outdoors - but only the shallots and garlic have come through at the moment. On the window sill I've got broccoli, carrots, courgettes, basil, aubergines, peppers and chillis, only the basil and broccoli are sprouting.
