  • New from Glasgow

    Hello all
I cannot tell you how excited I am to have joined this forum!

I have grown limited veg last year in Glasgow (Tomatoes, various salad leaves, spinach, and cauli (tho' the cauli not successful!)) and in my last year in Dubai went quite well (rocket, spinach, toms, broccoli (ok) and corn ) - they. I'm still very much a novice but very eager to learn - just love being in the garden, though have to admit to being grossed out by snails - yeeeuuch.

This year I am going to try various tomatoes, peas, lots of salad, corn, peppers, strawberries and blueberries. and maybe tatties too, but in a barrel. Might add to this but I'll see.

I have been trying to start a local group in Glasgow - have a few interested parties so hopefully will get that underway soon too

Looking forward to chatting and growing!
    Tracy

      Thanks for the welcome Seasprout!

I have a patch in the garden, about 3 x 3m - just building some raised beds, (though it's all a bit amateur I think), a cold greenhouse and I'm also going to plant on some borders (ripped various ugly stuff out earlier).

what do you have yourself and how long have you been growing?

Hi Tracey and welcome. What area of Glasgow are you in? I was born and lived on the outskirts of the city for the first 18 years of my life and my family are all still down there.

          Hello Tracey

Welcome to the vine, I have only joined recently, the forum is great.

I also have a patch in the garden, this is my second year. We tend to grow most of our veggies in the cold greenhouse and in raised beds. Last year we did OK, weather was terrible. This year hoping to learn from last years mistakes

            Hi Rat
I'm in Giffnock, moved here last year after living in Dubai for 8 years. I was brought up in yer old traditional Glasgow tenement, so not much opportunity for GYO - all a bit new to me, thoguh did a wee bit in Dubai - all a bit accidental. I have just about got the garden under control now, but still trying to name the perennials! Which area are you from and where are you now?

              Hi Herbie
              Thanks for the welcome!

The weather was grim last year - I have a premonition that it's going to be fantastic this year - an optimist I am...

How did you do your raised beds? I was thinking of getting those sunken wooden border things from B&Q. Not much good at joinery and Himself is worse than me! Do you think they would work if I put them in and added plenty of soil?

What are you going to be growing this year then?

Born in Lennox Castle (now the home of Sellik's training facility) which was a lunatic asylum at the time (early 60's) but lived in Milton of Campsie, Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch. Worked on farm above Queenzieburn (near Kilsyth)
Family now in Lenzie, Chryston and Auchinloch.
I am now in Tain 35 miles north of Inverness and rent 5 acres on a farm 7 miles away on which I grow veg, operate a veg box delivery scheme, sell at Farmers Markets and at the Farm Gate. Just starting my second year of business and this time next year I'll be a millionaire (Rodney )

Welcome TraceyP - sounds like you'll have fun..I've got a small 3mx3m veg patch also...well nearly! I have one half in linkabord raised bed, more money than I'd anticipated but not so much upkeep, the rest is in the ground! hope you get your Glasgow crowd rounded up and interested. Good luck

Thanks Nerobot - yes, delightful weather. I'm glad I had a chance of some time in the garden yesterday. Was hoping for today too, but I guess I should just clean the muddy boot prints of the kitchen floor...

                          Where in Glasgow are you?
