Hello everyone, Noticed most of you are in England or Wales, found you when I was trying to get advice on growing purple potatoes! I liked the idea of using bags for potatoes--I take it that dust bin liners are the black plastic bags we call trash can liners here in the States? I heard of using old vehicle tires to grow potatoes in. Do not know how well it does but I have 3-4 old auto tires and I may just try it as they say they act as a heat sink. As for my username, prunepicker is a nickname given to native born Californians, has gone out of style mostly since there are so many around now! Andi

hi and welcome to the vine, i'm sure you will find it very informative and fun. and yes black bin bags are trash can liners although most people just use the bags that we get compost in from the garden centres for growing spuds

      Hi Andi.

Loving the California Sunshine; alot of us Brits long for even a full week of sunshine - I for one am dead jealous [esp if you can grow tomatoes and peppers all year round].

For growing potatoes; we use bags that are a little thicker than trash can liners; usually the ones that we buy compost in - as being thicker they keep the light out. These days though, we are just as likely to use trash cans themselves, with holes in the bottom for drainage. Tyres are excellent as well.

Anyway, welcome to the Vine; if you put in your profile that you are from So California, then we won't think you have lost it when you are talking about the incessant heat out there!

Hello APP. Welcome to the GYO forum. I quite often browse the US garden sites, it's great to see the different methods people use to get things to grow. You over there shading things from the sun and us praying for a few hours of warmth to get seed to germinate. We're having a heat wave at the moment, the temperature in some places got up to nearly 12 degrees How's your winter been?
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

Hi and welcome to the vine Andi. Which purple spuds are you growing? My friends in Pleasanton CA (we lived there for a while) don't grow veggies but do have lots of citrus trees and grow some tomatoes and peppers.
