  • Greetings From Oz

Hi to all on The Grapevine.

My nic is mcsee and I'm situated in Melbourne, Australia and have a keen interest in the garden, growing mainly Capsicum/Pepper/Chilli and various Tomato varieties.

Just thought I'd say hello and hope I fit in here, I'm sure I will.

    mcsee.

    G'day and welcome!

Blimey, I think you may have won the "furthest flung member" award! lol Please stick a pin in our Grapes map (it's in a sticky thread in general chitchat)!

Keep us posted on how you do this year (we love photos too!)

      Hi Everdream,
Thanks for the welcome. Our Summer season is just about finished and I have one solitary tomato plant left in the ground (Sara's Galapagos) which I'm hanging out for some seed from. The weather is cooling here for our Autumn and I have started to move my Chillies into the hothouse to overwinter them.

I have a patch ready to sow a few winter vegetables in, but some will remain fallow.

      Good to make the contact.

      Cheers.

Completely by the by... I sit on a row of 4 desks and the other 3 peeps are all from Brisbane

Hello, good evening, and welcome. Sssshhhh, don't start talking about weather, you'll have everyone at it! We're expecting snow/sleet/hail/rain/wind/armageddon this weekend. It's 17 degrees outside at the moment!

Welcome aboard the good ship grapevine. Love the look of Melbourne, one day I might visit...

            Hi Shortie,
Thank you for your welcome too. Yes, it's been very dry here this summer with temperatures sometimes reaching 40C, quite often over 30C. We are also on water restrictions which just adds to the challenge.
I'll try and keep up with the forums and post when I can on how we survive and grow our vegetables here.

Maybe the three from Brisbane are lost.

            Regards

Hey wayne - Thanks for the welcome. You're on - I won't mention that it's 17 degrees and sleet.

Here's a photo for you Wayne - this is from the Rialto Towers in Melbourne.

One of my wife's colleagues is moving back to Oz (after doing som e travelling) with his wife, and they've invited us over when they are settled, so who knows I might make it one day. I reckon I'll probably not want to come home though.

Hi McSee, welcome to the 'Vine
I have a couple of half cousins in Melbourne, they have beautiful gardens (only seen pics tho, never been to visit unfortunately) but have also been struggling with water restrictions. Thankfully, it's never been a problem where I live - one of the wettest parts of Britain - I have to worry about how to get rid of it!

                      Hi Sarah,
I'm in the same boat as your half cousins with the water restrictions in place here at the present time. We can water with a hand held trigger nozzle for two hours twice a week 0600-0800hr (Tues & Sat).

Send me over a few bottles - my garden is in desperate need of a drink.

Thanks for the greeting, I may catch up on the forum at some time.

                      Cheers

See, now it's easy to solve this problem. If we just drill a small hole all the way through to Oz, feed a hose pipe down it with a funnel at "our" end. Bob's Fanny's brother!

A very simple cure for our water problem, Wayne. It's a wonder someone hasn't thought of it earlier.

We try and catch rainwater to help supplement our supply, but we've had a hot dry summer here this year.

Hey, we cracked the channel tunnel, this is just a little bit further...

You did a mighty fine job on the tunnel too, I might add.
