  • Hello & help!

Hi, I'm a novice gardener who is trying to grow veg for the third year, this time I've built two raised beds about 1.2 x 4mts. I thought I'd try growing carrots, beet & verious other stuff through Mypex this year on one of the beds as last year I found that once the weeds came up I couldnt tell the wood from the trees! Does this sound daft? I thought that if I plant through holes in this stuff I'll at least know it's what i planted coming up. We have rich soil & never use any chemicals at all, last year we nearly died from runner bean poisioning so we at least know how to grow these! My carrots were short & rude, how do I lighten up the soil? is it just adding compost?

Thanks for anticipated answers, this site seems a great idea & I have only just found it.

Regards to all who help, M

    Carrots: don't like rich soil.

Get a long stick /crowbar. Poke it as deep as you can. Wiggle it round a bit to make a cone shape. Fill with sand. plant 2 carrots in the top - and pull the weakest one out when they emerge.

    Or

go to the forum section entitled growing techniques and see the 'easy way with carrots' that PW has put up.

and hello, welcome to the Vine.

If you grow through mypex watch out for the slugs hiding underneath.

To tell your veggies from weeds try starting them off in modules/pots then transplant. This means they get chance to start before the pests come a-looking for them too.

Good advise, do slugs lie dormant in the ground as whatever they are before their slugs, ie are they already in my soil?
I've heard that slugs won't cross over copper, is this a myth?
If its true I could nail copper pipe along the top of my raised beds & be slug free for life...surely it cant be that easy.

Hello Martyn and welcoe to the Vine. If you're in your 3rd year of growing in Guernsey you're not a novice - maybe we should be looking to you for advice.
You're right that nailing copper pipe round your raised beds will not make you slug free - but I think there's a theory says it will. We all have to find a method that works for us. Wee blue crystals under the membrane (on little plastic sheets to keep the stuff out of the soil) works for me.
Don't feed your carrots or they will be rude.
Hope you have a great growing season. Alice x
