Evening all
Been thinking about it for a while, and have today decided that I am going to apply for an allotment. Hurrah!!!
I expect that this will take a while to get approved, but will give me plenty of time to brush up on my knowledge (currently almost non-existant) and work out what I actually want to do with it.
So let me introduce myself. I'm James, I live in Didcot, Oxfordshire. My partner, Vicki, and myself are 'adjusting' (overhawl more like) our diet to include more fruit and beg, etc. So to motivate me to eat it I thought I should grow it. See it develop before my eyes (not literally, I'm not going to live there) and get more interested in it all.
I have always been interested in GYO but never had the knowledge to back it up. And that is were all you, my lovely helpful, new friends come in. Hopefully I have sweetened you all up for you to not mind helping me and answering my questions. I expect some will be really stupid or obvious, but please grin and bare my ignorance. I am sure that with your kind words I will quickly learn.
So here goes, tomorrow I will hand my application form in, pay my deposit and wait. I might have a brew while waiting. How long does it all take? Seriously though, I know in Didcot all the allotments are currently taken, but I have no idea what the turnover is like. I have read on various websites that people can have them up to 30 years!!! A mighty impressive time indeed. I guess I will not know how long this will take until I get a phone call.
I have a small freestanding plastic greenhouse thing on my back patio with a few seeds I planted last weekend in the snow. (Not a great start for the seeds, I sure, but I'm sure it shows something about me other than insanity.) I expect it will be a few weeks yet before they start to show themselves. It is a start. I bought the seeds from Woolworth. It was a multi pack of six veg. Probably not the best quality seeds, but hopefully some will grow. Sat on the patio getting my hands dirty, planting the seeds and dodging the snow balls was the deciding factor for me and getting an allotment.
So thats it for now, I'm sure most of you haven't got this far. My ramblings don't normally go on this long, but may have put some people off. If you have got this far and are still awake, then thank you.
I hope to hear from some of you soon.
