Welcome to the Vine Muslimgrower. I've got some ginger on the go. It has little shoots on but how do I get it to burst into green growth. I've had ginger do it before, but more by accident than design. And it died once it got to about 4 inches. I'm determined to make it work this year - maybe with your help.

          hi alice..

The ginger plant does not like direct sunshine, it has to be kept in shade, you wont get a huge crop of rhizomes in the first season,

its best to wait till mid may to leave your small ginger plant outdoors and then you can leave it outdoors till september ( maybe longer if the weather is ok)

ill dig some pics of the ginger later to show you..

thats the stage were i am at right now, i had one from ( which i planted really late) last season which grew to around 15inches, and now its indoors in a cool dry place i will introduce it outdoors in mid may when it should bounce back and grow even bigger hopefully.

Hi MG from a fellow chilli fan! I'd love to see some curry recipes as well as the chutney ones, I'm a huuuuge fan of indian food, I'd eat it every single day if my husband could cope (but sadly he's more of a chinese food fan!).

Look forward to following your progress with the more exotic crops!

Hi - I just joined to and was very interested in your growing mangoes. This must be for a greenhouse or is it wishful thinking that you discovered a rare variety that grows in our UK climate?

Hola from Spain MG...I left the UK 5 years ago to come here...I love to grow veg etc and I have tried with exotic fruit trees but my daughters goat ate them !! I would love to grow a Mango tree... I have Orange, Lemon, Pomegranate, Olive, Almond and Nectarine trees..the goat ate my Mango, Avocado, Kiwi and a chinese fruit tree (can't bring the name to mind). Everything here needs so much water as it is so hot...I have potatoes, Jerusalem Artichokes, French Beans and Onions already growing well and the Rhubarb I grew from seed is flourishing..I have all types of squash nearly ready for transplanting as well as peppers, tomatoes and pickling cucumbers. Sorry to bend your ear so much but I would love to know how you grew your Mango stone...Happy gardening...Kayfrances

                        so many brits in spain

thanks for the welcome, my you are growing some exotic fruit i must admit..

good luck with the growing season,

the mango seed was wrapped in kitchen paper and sprayed with water and put inside a sandwich baggie on the windosill for 5 days and thats it !!!

making sure the kitchen paper doesnt dry by inspecting it everyday and spraying with water if its dry, and thats it, i started of 6 mango seeds and all germinated.

                          thanks for the welcome..

i will be taking pics and writing up on "how to make a great chutney" very soon, proper authentic Indian chutney, not the type you get at high st Indian restaurant ( even though its not too bad) and it only takes under 10 minutes to make, it comes in two different varieties one is a paste ( add plain white yogurt) and the other one is the "watery " chutney..

                            ok ill sort that out

I dont have a green house or a cold frame, i grow indoors under lights all year round if i want to... i usually start seeds indoors and then in may i leave all of them outdoors,

The ginger was started outdoors and it does great in a container ill show ya pics later, at the moment it has been indoors from october 2007 till present, i kept it in a dry dark room, it should bounce right back in mid may and continue growing, i have a tutorial somewhere with pics on how to start of a ginger that you buy from the local shop...

I've managed to get mango seeds growing, but they get to about 6" high, with 6 - 8 leaves, then just fade away. Any suggestions?
