caught green thumbs from Nanna but only after she died and someone had to care for plants. 15yrs later, some of those still living, but it led me into a career with indoor contract plants. before that, wanted to grow, but no space. few spuds, toms, strawbs, rasps etc in tubs in tiny yard. Parents city born and bred, wouldn't know a home grown carrot if it hit them in face! Brother n sister both also city and both allergic to and scared of animals. I fell in love with horses at 2and have always yearned to be able to keep them at home. Still no can do (but get my 'fix' when poss), worked with em for a while, but fell into 'horticulture'. Met current partner, moved here, had 2nd child, and fruit and veg have become my obsession. His job is mostly ornamental, and when we first moved here, that was where his inclination lay for our own garden. But now veg garden taking over.
But in digging to start raised bads, we could build a house with the rocks that have come out! It appears that we have some glacial rocks, but we have also discovered the foundations of an old building that even the oldest natives don't remember and that don't show on any plans. We've left the oldest and biggest stones in place, (theyre 2ft downand huge), but the rest are building paths. We'll get there eventually. This year we've completed one bed, 24' by 4' with 7 more to go in adjacently and two extra snaller ones for the kids, plus a 20 x 10 tunnel and cold frames to accomodate. New bed planted with carrots, onions, spring onions, radish, beetroot, lettuce, edged with parsley and chives. Lots more to say, but I'll be boring you all and want to get on to ask questions, so that's where I'll go next. Maybe I'll hear from some of you soon with answers. ttfn. Ruth.

Welcome Ruth from another relative newcomer, Good luck with your endeavours.

I see you are in bonny Scotland, may I ask which part??

This forum has been a great source of information for me, I have always grown tomatoes, but last year hubby bought me a greenhouse and this year dug my beds and If it grows I am growing it. Each day I learn something new either from here or from my experiences within my greenhouse and garden.

So welcome again Ruth and best wishes

        Hi, Topaz,

been looking back at my posts, and realised that I never thanked you for welcoming me to the grapevine. And yet I was so pleased to get a response at the time. Unfortunately my youngest got very demanding then and I had little time or energy for the internet (being a beginner at that, too) and when I got back on it was to ask questions whenever I got chance. Anyway, thank you

        Ruth

          Hi, Peanut.

Sorry to never thank you for your welcome to the grapevine last year. You prob don't remember, but I thought I'd let you know we've got a couple more beds in, and hoping for more success this year. Getting rabbits and grey squirrels under control, and really gonna have a go at the basted slugs. Fruit bed as soon as weather allows us to dig (got half decent crop in lge tubs last yr), and youngest boy now able to toddle around so hopefully I won't be tied to nap times to get things done. Thanks for your encouragement. This is a great site!

          Thank You

            Hi and welcome Ruth.
Basted slugs sounds like something from "I'm a celebrity..." but we all know exactly what you mean.
Enjoy your garden, and your rocks.

              Hi, Bob,

That was supposed to be BLASTED slugs (not the other similar word - I may use it when I find them but not on here!)

              Thanks

Have finally got hang of pop-ups, so, to anyone who sent a private post, please re-send so I can reply, as I kept losing losing them. Please don't just think me ignorant. May take me a few days to reply, (lot of demand on pc, and Mum comes last!) but I will.
