caught green thumbs from Nanna but only after she died and someone had to care for plants. 15yrs later, some of those still living, but it led me into a career with indoor contract plants. before that, wanted to grow, but no space. few spuds, toms, strawbs, rasps etc in tubs in tiny yard. Parents city born and bred, wouldn't know a home grown carrot if it hit them in face! Brother n sister both also city and both allergic to and scared of animals. I fell in love with horses at 2and have always yearned to be able to keep them at home. Still no can do (but get my 'fix' when poss), worked with em for a while, but fell into 'horticulture'. Met current partner, moved here, had 2nd child, and fruit and veg have become my obsession. His job is mostly ornamental, and when we first moved here, that was where his inclination lay for our own garden. But now veg garden taking over.
But in digging to start raised bads, we could build a house with the rocks that have come out! It appears that we have some glacial rocks, but we have also discovered the foundations of an old building that even the oldest natives don't remember and that don't show on any plans. We've left the oldest and biggest stones in place, (theyre 2ft downand huge), but the rest are building paths. We'll get there eventually. This year we've completed one bed, 24' by 4' with 7 more to go in adjacently and two extra snaller ones for the kids, plus a 20 x 10 tunnel and cold frames to accomodate. New bed planted with carrots, onions, spring onions, radish, beetroot, lettuce, edged with parsley and chives. Lots more to say, but I'll be boring you all and want to get on to ask questions, so that's where I'll go next. Maybe I'll hear from some of you soon with answers. ttfn. Ruth.
