I'm new to vegetable gardening, and plan to make a raised bed using an old bed slatted frame. Is it OK to have a wooden/semi solid base to put the topsoil etc. on?

You don't really want any kind of base to your raised bed, just the sides. -
hi suzy, welcome to the vine...my raised beds sit on gravel and i don't have any problems. But like fiveravens says...it's on the sides that are important. happy gardening!

Hi suzie welcome to the vine, the problem with having a bottom is that it restricts what you can grow, lots of things need really deep roots.Yo an' Bob

yeah yoanbob is right...but i've got 12" deep raised beds so should've made that clear. One of the beds is only 6" deep and is fine for veg like beetroot, lettuce, spring onions etc!
