  • Hello all

Hello everyone. I have always been a keen gardener and grew a lot of our veg when the children were small but time passes and apart from flowers which I grow from seed in my greenhouse I gave up on the veg. This year however, our daughter and son in law took on a large overgrown field and have worked wonders with it and have enthusiastically planted lots of veg. It stirred me up again and as my OH had already built me a raised bed I have been starting salad, tomatoes and beans etc in the greenhouse weeks ago. Also some under a cloche in the garden. Also potatoes in black sacks and in the ground. All doing well. Unfortunately can't say the same for me!! I broke my left wrist three weeks ago on a short holiday in Wales and last Friday I had to have an operation at my local hospital to reduce the fracture and have a metal plate put in. It's holding me up now. Still, my OH has been dilligently weeding and preparing the ground for me and has already planted some of it up. It is so frustrating though.Ah well, there's always next year I suppose, and I haven't entirely given up yet. I look forward to reading all your news and I pick up lots of tips. Best wishes to all Sandra

Welcome to the forum, Sanjo. Hope the wrist is ok soon, in the mean time, you only need one hand to sow seed. Now is the time to just sit in the garden with a glass of your favourite tipple and enjoy the good weather
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

Hi Sanjo, that sounds nasty! Take care of it. However, eating wholesome, fresh home-grown produce can only help your wrist to mend better. Hope the season is reasonable for you. You can direct and Himself can be your assistant for the time being! Good luck.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. The metal plate in the wrist is likely to leave it permanently stiff but it should be usable eventually for raising the odd glass of vino! Go to the fracture clinic on Tuesday where I hope they can tell me they did a good job and offer to take out the stitches. I am months away from being anything like normal apparently but time will heal I expect. B****y painful at the moment though. I am based in Essex where yesterday and today it has been glorious. We got all the runner beans in and the first lot of salad stuff planted out and I have planted up my hanging baskets with tumbling toms. I had my first little pickings of lettuce tonight and I felt very proud of myself. Next job the front flower beds but I'm a bit too sore at the moment to even think of it so tomorrow is an out and about day away from the garden. Keep up the good work everyone

Hi Francesbean, well I was a typist for many years, more accurate than speedy truth to tell (which was probably just as well since I worked for a solicitor!!) but it helps in the current situation. Sanjo
