  • Hi from chilli gal

    Hi to Everyone,

I'm new and would love to know more about growing fruit and veggies. I mostly grow in containers as our garden is mainly patio. I'm growing runner beans in deep tubs at the moment, tomatoes, and cucumbers all outside. I'm also growing chillis - my new variety is pimientos de padron. If anyone knows anything about them, I'd be grateful for any advice - especially how much warmth that they need.

I live in West Wales in Pembrokeshire where we have a fairly warm and damp micro climate, as this part of the County juts out into the Irish Sea.

Is there anyone out there with any advice about container growing?

Looking forward to meeting you all

Hi chilli gal, not grown padron chilli but have heard of them

    Peperoncino Ltd

5th one down. Also on Seeds of Italy it says

Mid-early, mild. Medium-sized, bushy plant. Medium to long flat, conical light green fruits, turning red when ripe. Meaty and very tasty. Traditionally in Galicia they are panfried in olive oil, salted with sea salt and served with beer. Sow Feb-Jun.

Hi Chilli Gal, It's Maz in Laugharne - I'm growing flowers on the patio, but have a son who keeps nagging me to grow chillis, so may have a go this year. I have a veg garden that we will be eating potatoes from in a week or so, runners that are half way to the top of the poles, sweet corn almost ready to transplant, and cabbage, broad beans, carrots, loads of onions, garlic, shallots and of course lettuce. My tomatoes went haywire earlier in the season (a sudden frost) so have just ordered some cherry toms.I'll be putting in beetroot this week both Bolthardy and Italian (very pale) that I grew last year and even though they don't look like beetroot taste fantastic.

Welcome to the Vine Chilli Gal. You can grow just about anything in a container if it's big enough. You just have to decide if it will give you a worthwhile crop.
Why not try some carrots, lettuce and salad leaves, parsnip, radish, spring onions, red onion from sets, herbs, strawberries, potatoes in buckets, the list is endless. Good luck and do let us know how your growing gets on.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

          Hi Alice,
I might try spring onions - I've just put some salad bowl lettuce seeds in. I was wondering about potatoes and carrots but was worried about slugs etc. I've grown the Italian tomato costoluto fiorentino. All the seeds came up so now I'm wondering where to put them all!
I put tumbling tom in hanging baskets and a chimney pot - the neighbours think I'm a bit crazy. so I'm waiting to see what will happen!

It sounds really wonderful. Gardening in pots is OK, but it must be lovely to have all that space over at Laugharne. The tumbling toms that I planted in hanging baskets have already fruited with loads of tiny green toms. I went mad and mixed them up with geraniums.
They really look pretty - but people think I'm a bit strange!
            Have fun with your veg!
