Hi to all,

I managed to secure a half size allotment November of last year. My God digging out the brambles was back breaking!
I have planted quite a lot of veg which I obtained via ebay. The trouble is the peas, runner and french beans have been a real struggle to grow. Is it best to grow in pots then transplant or is it best to sow straight in the "expected" growing site. I think I inadvertently tried too hard with peas/beans. Kept them damp and gave the some bottom heat via an electric propagator.

Any tips would be most welcome.

I always start my Peas and Beans off in pots then plant them out when they are big enough not to be eaten.
Another thing you can do is chit them on some damp kitchen roll until they sprout then plant them into pots

I also find that sometimes early sowings don't work, you can sow all of those until July, so keep trying, you'll get some in the end!!

peas and beans are easy to grow - but easy to kill too
i start everything in pots and transplant - less chance of them getting eaten by slugs
beans were grown in toilet roll tubes this year, but cooked them all in overheated greenhouse couple of weeks back so had to start again
hope to get them planted out next week

I am in New Malden area. Good news on the French beans. Two different varieties (hunter & prince) just sprouted.

I got fed up waiting for the runner beans so I carefully moved the soil off the top. Guess what not a bean in site. Mice I think! So its down to the garden centre for new stock.

Thanks for the tip. I think I will try the damp kitchen role idea. I have to buy new runner beans as it seems mice have been at the previous stock. Unless it is possible for large beans to dissolve in soil!!
