  • New member, new allotment!!

    Hi All,

We have just been able to get hold of 1 1/2 allotments after having our names on a waiting list since October last year. I can't express how exciting it's all been since we went down to the allotment for the first time to choose our plot just two weeks ago (because we were only wanting one!) to paying up and then starting on the plot. Because there was a spare half plot next to ours the secretary said we were welcome to take that one on so we did!! Overall size is 45ft by 90ft. Huge!!!! especially when it is covered in rubbish and weeds that have been accumulating over a minimum of 1year.

We love it and have been spending all available / spare time there, we have even been packing packed lunches and flasks to get as much done as possible. The kids love the allotment and have already made new friends as the lottie holder next door to us has two young children roughly the same age as our 2 that are 6 and 4.

We already have a manure pile reasy for the pumpkins and butternut squash thanks to my mates horses and we have planted just under 200 potatoes of 5 different types, shallots and onions. We are now trying to get the next patch ready for the beans and peas plus make an area at the rear flat and hard for a shed which should be arriving sometime in the week (we need somewhere to boil a kettle!) .

This allotment is really becoming an addiction, we all love it so much and my only regret is why didn't we do this sooner!!

I never thought I would enjoy the weeding, digging, pruning hawthorn, cutting back brambles and tidying up broken chainlink fencing, even the rubbish collecting! It's a whole new experience.

I spent the evenings of the last two weeks sitting on the sofa at around 8.30pm after the kids were put to bed saying to my husband, is this feeling of complete and total exhaustion normal? to which he replied. Of course it is, plenty of fresh air and walking backwards and forwards to the allotment toilet with the two kids which are at the opposite end of the site 2 fields awayon top of weeding and digging. What did you expect?

To which I responded, Oh Yeah. So shall we do it again tomorrow?

        It's GREAT !!!!

I will keep my fingers crossed for you!! I found it so frustrating waiting. I think the secretaries were glad to finally let us have a plot. One secretary gave up the job so I was then on the phone constatntly at the beginning of the year making sure the new secretary didn't lose our details during the handover. It is great though having your own plot of land that you can plan and grow whatever you put your mind to. I'm so excited !!!

            I share in your excitement

I'm afraid allotment gardening is not that popular in Ireland but there has been a steady increase in demand of late as apartments are springing up allover the place and people don't have gardens anymore.

I have always loved gardening as I grew up with a large garden and miss not being able to grow things. You can only do so much with a balcony

Welcome to the madhouse oft referred to as the 'vine Lovebirds!

We got our first plot in October 2006, then spent 6 months clearing it of 8' depth of weeds, brambles and bindweed! Hard work but definitely rewarding, especially with over #850 of fresh organic fruit and veg that we harvested last year! Hope you have as much fun and that your crops are bountiful!
              Blessings
