  • Hi & What's the difference?

Mostly just saying hello to all but also, can anyone shed light on the difference between perlite and vermiculite or are they the same thing or is one of them just a brand name?

    Thanks in advance

Perlite is mixed with compost or soil to improve drainage and aeration while vermiculite holds the moisture without the compost becoming soggy.

    Oops, forgot to say hello!

Hello and welcome. Perlite is volcanic glass whereas vermiculite is mostly clay. Both have the property of expanding when heated and in the expanded (exfoliated) state they are able to absorb water as well as aerate soil. They aren't brand names but are terms used by mineralogists.

Ah that's a little clearer. Thank you both for your help and your welcomes.
