  • Hi everyone

Hi everyone, this is a great forum, full of ideas and advice.

I am a busy mum (with 3 nearly grown up boys) who loves gardening, started off with flowers, shrubs etc, but am now venturing into veggies and fruit.

I have a small patch in the garden growing lettuces, courgettes and chives. Strawberries in containers and a blueberry bush in a pot (our garden is heavy clay so i prefer putting some things in pots)

I grew the chives from seed and put them out last week but they look very grasslike still - will I be able to cut them this first season and get some flowers?

Hi harleen, dont know about chives, but welcome. veg gardening is infectious, I started 3 years ago with a few spuds, and now want more space. Good luck.

Welcome to the Vine Harleen. Don't know if your chives will flower this year - probably - but they sure will next year - you can't keep a good chive down. There's nothing to stop you using the baby chives. And if you want to keep some for the winter they freeze well. Just snip them into lengths on a tray, put it in the freezer about 2 hours then place in a freezer box. They come out free flow. Same for any herb. They're no use for garnishes but great for cooking . Good luck with the project.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
