Firstly, let me say - fantastic name. If you were born 3 years later you'd be me!

Anyway, congratulations on making the decision to grow your own, and for finding this place.

I'm new to all this myself, and the people on this site have been invaluable in my progress so far.

Have a quick browse round the site, utilise the search facility and you'll find a wealth of info to get you started. Be sure to add your location to your profile (top left of screen, click on "User CP") in order to make it easier for others to impart area specific advice and above all, enjoy yourself.

    Good luck.

      Welcome to the vine Wayne!

Its a bit late to start toms from seed now, but if you're lucky you should still be able to buy some growing plants from your local Garden Center (GC), along with peppers, cucumbers, chillies, aubergines and perhaps melon plants, it is late in the season, but its still worth a go!

Spuds, again a bit late, but if you tried some quick growing varieties, such as an Early variety, you may get a crop - if you can avoid the dreaded potato blight!

You could definitely get some salad veg in, radish, lettuce, beetroot will all grow pretty quickly and give good crops before the summer is over!

I'd also look to what you may be able to plant now for the winter, red cabbages, spring cabbages, some caulis and broccollis are all about ready to go in, especially if you can get them as 'plug plants' from the GC.

Other than that, then plan ahead now for the autumn, sowings of overwintering garlic, onions from set, broad beans will give you earlier crops next year,

Lastly, are you planning on growing fruit? Raspberry canes, rhubarb, pear and apple trees, brambles and strawbs can all be planted as soon as the growing season is over, allowing them to grow away really well next spring!

It would be helpful for us all to be able offer advice if we knew whereabouts in the world/uk you were, and what sort of growing space you have, a garden, allotment, field, greenhouse, polytunnel, patio containers or what?

Anyhows, good luck and I hope you enjoy the vine as much as the rest of us 'grapes' do!
      Blessings

Growbags on the floor, pots on shelves (weight issues!!!)
I would recommend some potatoes in pots (not on shelves!) too. You can plant (earlies) now and they will be ready before the frosts - if you are lucky!

A browse through 'Introduce Yourself' will show that most of us here are new to gardening, too

I don't know enough to suggest what you could start to grow now, but it looks like it will be in tubs and growbags. If you get keener perhaps you could lift a few flags If you put your name down for an allotment now, you would be well into the waiting list by the time next spring comes round; and if you decide not to go ahead you should be able to cancel without any problems

The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

Welcome and congratulations on the decision to GYO (and having such a beautiful name).

You haven't got much to lose by giving things a go - especially if you can get plants cheaply at this time of year. I garden in pots and beds too. Definately get some cut and come again salad leaves on the go - you'll be eating them in three weeks, and tomatoes should still be fine if you can buy some either about to flower or just flowering.

Good luck! Loads of great advice here.
