  • New Seed From Nottingham

    Hi all,

    Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Lisa from Nottingham. I was referred to this site from my friend, Sarah. I am a newbie to anything gardening although I have wanted to try growing my own for some time now. My mum and dad normally grow their own tomatoes, Runner and Dwarf beans and I know I wanted to try my hand at those two.

    So in total, this is really what I wanted to try my hand at. Any help would greatly be appreciated on where to buy seeds cheapest for best taste, varieties, sowing times, place to put in greenhouse etc.

    * Runner beans,
    * Dwarf beans,
    * Peas,
    * Potatoes - white and new (need one of those standing pots),
    * Strawberries (maybe in hanging basket),
    * Lettuce (prefer Iceberg, but willing to try others that are easy/nice),
    * Tomatoes,
    * Carrots,
    * Sweetcorn,
    * Cabbage,
    * Garlic,
    * Cucumber,
    * Pears,
    * Spring Onions,
    * Chili,
    * Apples (we have a miniature apple tree already but it only produced 1 apple late year),
    * Peppers.

    We also wanted to do..
    * Oranges,
    * Pomegranate,
    * Lemons,
    * Grapes.
    But not sure if they take that well in the UK (in a greenhouse or not??)

    We do not currently have a greenhouse. However, I do have my eye on one of those mini plastic ones. It has 4 shelves and is a walk in type.

    Can anyone let me know what I still have chance to do this year out of the above? I think I'm a bit too late with everything now but hoping there might be something I can still start on this year

    Thanks in advance,
    -Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

    You might find peas, and lettuce will be ok to sow.

    Garlic and autumn planted onion sets will be next up, say about November time.

      You can still sow some
      Spring cabbage (I like Offenham Flower of Spring).
      Carrots - quick growing Nantes types
      Spring Onion (winter hardy White Lisbon - sow in winter, harvest in spring)
      Japanese onions (Keepwell is good for me)
      Lettuce - any, although there are specific winter-hardy varieties. I prefer Rusty.
      Peas - try an early (it means quick) type like Feltham First.
      Garlic
      Broad Beans (Aquedulce Claudia, sow in Nov)

      good luck
