  • hi from south kerry ....

well im new to all this and have just planted carrot and betroot seeds outside in creates and i used new compost i just purchased. well it has rained alot since i set them and now in the mornings when i check them , there is little jelly-like transparent lumps sitting on top of the compost?????
they seem to dissolve away as the sun gets at them , but only towards the evening .

could anyone tell me what this is ??????????????

will it stop my veg from growing ??????????

Hello Katie, and welcome to the vine. Have you checked the compost bag. Some of them I notice state that they have water retaining qualities ie water storage crystals. These, once activated with water, will look like little lumps of jelly. Just check the compost bag and see if it mentions it. They will appear to dissolve away as they are heated by the sun because the water will have evaporated. I am sure another grape will be along soon to help out. Sanjo

      hi sanjo
thanks very much for your reply, i did check the bag and yes it does say "it provides the plants with the correct quantities of water, air and nutrients"
so i have nothing to worry about, its doing the job, all i have to do now is wait and see some progress
      thanks again !!
