Hello from warwickshire!

Hi,
I have been lurking for a while and thought it was time to introduce myself.
I have been growing veg for the last couple of years a bit half heartedly but my enthusiasm is growing and I have ordered my poly tunnel. I cant believe I am so excited about some plastic sheeting but there you go.
This year was my first attempt at brassicas and I have shed many a tear over the massive caterpillar problems I have encountered!Have now given up. They can have them but next year they can find somewhere else to dine.
On positive note, I have fabulous courgettes, tomatoes, chillis, and one aubergine. I have made lots of jam and have soup and frozen berries in the freezer so I am proud of my achievements.
Have decided to turn my front garden into a strawberry plot (not keen on flowers) so todays plan it to rehome my runners if it stays dry that is.

Hi catkin Welcome!i too have a massive caterpillar problem,someone on here said to try nematodes so i will go down that route next year.e.mail info@just-green.com.Sounds like your doing really well.Have fun.

Hello Catkin and welcome. Have managed (touch wood and whistle!!!) to avoid the caterpillars so far but keep checking just in case. After all, a sneaky little blighter might just creep up on my psb when I am not looking. Good luck with the runners and strawbs anyway.

Yoooo Hooo, Just had a look out the window but can't see you catkin, must be over towards Jacob Marley I guess

Yer Brassica's, I had a similar problem a few years ago and I was tipped off about Salt, yes good old Table salt about a tablespoon to the gallon of water and then go over the plants - they don't like it I can tell you (caterpillars that is). Don't give up completely on flowers, they brighten the plot up and some are down right beneficial.
