  • Hello To Everyone

    Hello,
This is my first post here,I joined the Forum today, after 30 years traveling the world, and never home for very long periods ,I have now got myself an allotment, my father and Grandfather both had allotments all their lives,so I am carrying on a Family Tradition. I love having the plot I got it in April this year,It was already set out into raised beds,so I have kept it that way as it suites the way we want to garden. The plot was overgrown and had not been worked for two years,so there was a lot of hard work by my wife her sister and my sons to do to get it into shape. I bought a Petrol Strimmer on ebay, and this was brilliant for clearing away the bracken that had started to cover the ploy, we now use it to keep the paths clear. We planted everything we could get in this year and had some good results with some plants, and disasters with others, the worse were the carrots, they all got rootfly and had to go to the compost heap. My major mission for next year are good carrot's.(advice please) I am a vegetarian and hope to grow all my veg organically without putting any dead animal bits into my soil.I would be interested to hear from others who feel the same way, and any advice they can offer.
    Best Regards
    Dennis

Not a veggie myself, so can only say welcome.

Did try putting animals bits in my soil but it didn't work.

Put boy childs hamster in the blender and poured into a bed but didn't get tulips from hamster jam (sorry)
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

Welcome aboard Popeye - I guess you'll be including spinach in your growing plans?

As for carrots - if you're not starting them off in the ground, go for the loo-roll method (using the loo-roll centres as a root trainer), and make sure you plant them up high to avoid root fly. As I recall carrot root fly only fly up as high as around 18 inches, so anything above that should do it. Old bath tubs seem to be the most preferred growing vessel.

Good luck, and be sure to keep us posted (pardon the pun).

hi popeye and welcome, with regards the carrots, next year am going to knock a wooden frame up,at least 2ft high, line it with heavy weight polythene, and chichen wire on the outside,as haywayne says, they are high jumpers, the reason for the chichen wire is,we are plagued by the badgers this year,so will experiment next, this year the little monsters had a go at me sweet corn, kept under a net,so i put some wire around the outside, attatched to the wooden frame holding up the debri netting, and this worked, until a two legged one entered me pen and had of with about 3 thirds, best af luck with your lottie.
