Hello Everybody,

I thought I had better pop in and say "Hi". I have been reading this forum on and off for a few weeks, picking up tips here and there, which is great for a complete novice like me.

I am going to have a go at resurrecting an old large veg patch, which has been left to run wild over the last 3-4 years. I have no idea where to start and I definitely have no idea what I'll end up growing (hoping it won't just be weeds though), as I've never done anything like this before.

I come from a long line of Grow your Own-er's but somehow the Green Fingered Gene seemed to have skipped a generation and so far I have only ever managed to grow things with 4 legs and fur.....But that is all set to change (I hope).

I look forward to picking your brains and hopefully sharing a few of my successes over the coming months.

A good time of year to be renovating a veggie patch, if you dig it the frost will help to break up the earth. Plus it's the time of year to be looking through the seed catalogues and planning...and probably buying too many seeds....!

Hello and welcome to the grapevine. If you can find any brains, you are welcome to pick them! Planning and digging will get you ready for spring. Keep an eye on the 'What I did Today' thread and it will help you to see what others are doing - great for jogging your memory about jobs you should have in hand. Also, take note of where they live - conditions are very different up and down the country. I don't bung things in until several weeks after the early birds down south.

Welcome aboard Jules, and congratulations on finding the best place for advice, inspiration and fun times - gardening related or no.

I'd suggest the best course of action would be to get stuck in - you will get plenty of advice and guidance from the experienced growers on here, but none of it can take the place of good honest hands on experience. You'll soon get to grips with the basics and from there on, the world is your patch/plot.

I am looking forward to getting stuck in. I'm going to go and take some photos of the plot today (as a sort of "Before" to hopefully go with an "After") and try to work out where to start and what I need, as I don't even own a spade.

Ooo I'm not far from where you were. I'm in Sunny Basildon and the plot is on a farm close by (plenty of horse manure at the ready). I'm a born and raised Essex Girl, although I'm not blonde and don't dance round my handbag (well not often anyway ).....Can't say Thurrock is my favourite area either .

Thanks for the tip on the "What I did today" thread, as I'll need all the suggestions/ideas I can get over the coming months.

I'll probably have loads of really obvious and dumb questions to ask soon but I'll try not to be deliberately annoying
