The antique computer died a death recently, so after a decent period of mourning I took a trip to PC world yesterday Now that I have something that doesn't take half the day to open, thought I'd take a look at what's out there, and this looks like a great forum. I've been expanding my fruit and veg plot in the bottom of a little used communal garden for a few years now and also experimenting with growing things on my own little south-facing patio. Came into six polycarbonate sheets that were getting thrown out and so last weekend I knocked together a little lean-to 'greenhouse' for the patio - should be space for a few grow-bags and a shelf or two, if it remains standing after the winter storms! Never had a greenhouse or conservatory before. Any advice for what to grow in it and when? I look forward to getting chatting garden.

You could grow some salad items over winter. Start them off from seed on the windowsill and then aclimatise them before putting them in your greenhouse. The rate of growth is slow but if you grow them very close together, then the thinnings make for a great salad in sandwiches etc.

One of the biggest worries will be proper ventilation as otherwise you will see your efforts rot, so try not to over water. I usually use some growbags, just stick a digit in to make sure they stay damp but not too wet.

Welcome to the Vine Gettingrowin. You've come to the right place. You should be able to do quite well on your south facing patio. You could grow some garlic in a container. Stuff from the supermarket will be fine for this year. No need to put it in your wee greenhouse. It will be just fine outside. Look forward to seeing how you get on.

Thanks everyone. Think I might just try the salad and garlic - and maybe some overwintering peas - been reading about them on the undercover operations pages. This weekend I've been busy digging over the veg plot, weeding around the fruit bushes and planting out raspberry runners. With bagpipes and drums and bidsong in the background today - which was different. (Armistice Sunday marches. The garden birds got very excited about the bagpipes.)

welcome to the site, i thought i would be a bit bare this time of year, but popped in to check the contents of my greenhouse earlier, and there is green stuff growing everywhere.

including i might add the butternut squash seedlings still going strong and under attack by bleddy snails!!! so the guerilla war continues.

Hi and welcome. I'm going for winter salads and green stuff in the greenhouse this winter. Himself has just made a brilliant job of clearing it our for me - while I picked the last of the drying beans to finish off inside. Going to try some of the spicy greens and some winter lettuce.

Great bunch on here it's been my first year and this lot have been really helpful, they're all responsible for me getting chooks as well

In my unheated conservatory I have got some kale, lambs lettuce and two bell peppers taking ages to get big enough to eat maybe Christmas day they'll be ready.
