  • Hello from Lincolnshire

    Hi guys

I got a copy of this magazine in WH Smith so I thought I'd check out the
site. This forum is a great find and seems very friendly and helpful.

I started growing my own last year on impulse and due to the fact my next
door neighbour has fab little 'green space' going on his his back yard.

I have no garden to speak of just a concrete jungle of a back yard. My only
    choice was container gardening.

The picture below is last years efforts of seeds/plug plants of flowers and
    veg

I am hoping this year to get the whole 'yard' looking 'green' like my neighbour.
He's a great guy and has been helping me out with bits and bobs.

Best thing about last year was getting to grow Broccoli in containers and
bad thing - My parsnips turned out to be carrots Not sure what
    happened there.

Can't wait to get some more advice and hopefully help some other people in
    return.

    Cheers all
    Aylith

It's amazing what you can grow in a pot

Have you thought of making a raised bed?

        Hi Pdblake

i didn't know if I could or not as I always thought with raised beds you'd still needed to
have some sort of soil under it anyhow?

            Hello and welcome Aylith

I'm also in Lincolnshire (Lincoln itself, in fact). Your yard plot looks fabulous. Are you going to put your name down for an allotment?
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Hi and welcome. I didn't think I needed an allotment as I have a big garden, which is half filled with veg beds. However, after joining up here, I realised I NEEDED more space, more seeds, etc. Lots of vine members grow in pots and raised beds though.
              You'll never look back.

I would have thought it would be alright so long as it's deep enough. If not you could always take a pickaxe to that concrete

nope, if you think about it, a raised bed is just a big container.
so most containers are 12" to 18 " deep , and lots of us grow stuff at that depth with great success.
so if you did a raised bed on the patio ( which i have done) and make it 2' deep, then you should be able to grow nearly anything in it, except maybe a tree and even some of those grow in large pots, a neighbour has a date palm, very large growing, in a tub no deeper than 2.5'.
just think of the patio as the bottom of your 'large container'
