Hi there- and welcome to the Vine!!

Start planning- and making list of plants you want to grow , and where- and what equipment you think you'll need to buy!
Look through loads of books too ( then we can ask you for advice!)
...actually- it'll make you realise how much you already know without realising it!

Do you have a lottie- garden patch or plan to grow in tubs?

heres a quote hope it make sense

A first-generation offspring of two plants of closely related species or strains. (The “F” stands for “filial.”) The resulting plants are usually more vigorous than either parent and have other qualities that are considered more desirable. However, the seeds produced by an F1 hybrid will rarely produce plants of comparable value.

Now's the perfect time to reflect on what you want to do and plan! Not that I did last year am trying to plan this year though. Once you've started to think about what you want to grow and where, the grapes here are really friendly and helpful so good luck!

              Welcome to the Vine Scrummy.
So many questions there, and you might get on better asking them one at a time.
But, potatoes you grow from seed potatoes and onions from onion sets (well you can grow them from seed but I don't recommend it for a beginner.) Both will be available in garden centres now, but there's no rush to plant. It's still very cold so I would just work on planning til spring comes - and working on getting answers to your questions.
              Good luck with the project.

                Hi scrummy,

Welcome to the Vine. You'll find lots of helpful advice on here - and lots of lovely helpful people as well.
You'll find sowing advice on the back of seed packets, though small plants and sets (onions & shallots) are always available from garden centres if you decide to take that option.
If you're starting now, then you can do a lot from seed at this time of year - what do you and your family like to eat?
Use the search facility on the Vine to check out threads on specific veggies or fruit - you'll be sure to find lots of previous discussions on most things.

This is just the time of year to get cracking! You need a roaring fire, a nice cup of tea with some chocolate biscuits and a great pile of seed and plant catalogues. Then have a lovely time planning and dreaming!

Have a google search companion planting! There will be web sites that tell you what plants grow well together. Also what not to plant near each other! Will give you a few ideas

Hi, i felt exactly the same, you've waited for your plot got it and then it is eek what now?
Make a list of things you like to eat on the veggie front and stuff you would like to try. Get hold of a good ref book like Andy Clevelly's lottie book lots of really good advice about planning out your lottie and what to grow where.
If you feel better with a smaller bit do that first, i divided my plot into three and so far i have tackled the clearing first and then put in a few raised beds, lots still to do but i can see i have made a mark so far.
I know what you mean about the cold so plan and do some reading whilst it is still so cold and then when the Spring comes you'll be ready.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
