  • Hi there!

Nice to meet you all - I'm a fairly novice gardener, working a weedy (double)plot in Derby with my wife, brother-in-law and a friend.

Really looking forward to the summer and starting to gather in our crops that we'll be planting soon - though perhaps not as much as I'm looking forward to getting the rotavator hired.

At the moment we've planted a couple of redcurrant canes and a handful of spring narcissi (to have at least something in the ground and growing while we turn over the rest of the plot) - the garlic would have gone in Saturday last too, if the soil hadn't been near-frozen...........

This apart, all going well - would have liked to have got more beds dug out by now, but the weather's not been so great. Not a lot to be done there.

Jobs for the next few weeks involve:
    - digging out more beds on the plot
    - getting some bits and pieces (toms, peppers and aubergines) started off indoors while the heating's on
    - sorting out some bits of timber and finally building the cold frame I've been talking about for, oh, ages
    - starting off a decently-made compost heap
    - hiring the rotavator and using it!

Looking forward to getting to know you all, talking about garden-y things and (hopefully) getting and sharing good advice.

Should be a lot of fun!

Hello and welcome to the mad-house.

You sound pretty well organised, and not short of labour either. Hope it goes well for you.

Hi and welcome. Quite a few people have more than one plot. I've only got half but my garden's big!

Thanks, all of you, for the kind welcome! Pleased to meet you all.

We're getting well stuck into things - only problem being that our plot's a little bit further away than we'd like. Not a problem in the summer, but it's making a difference to enthusiasm levels right now. Really need to make the effort to round up "volunteers" to make a trip up there some weekends.....

But then, I think the recent weather'd have done that itself anyway. Ugh.

As for talk of gardens, we've been thinking about growing a few herbs outside next to the kitchen door (it's really not a big yard though, if truth be told); I might also kick off growing a few container-based things too, if there's time and money for it. See how it goes!

Zazen - I go through Shardlow pretty much every day, as I work in Castle Donington! If you know the area, we're at the Five Lamps end of the Duffield Road, pretty much bang on the town centre - our plot's on the Sunnydale site, off Stenson Road.

I have herbs just outside the back door. If I had to go further than that I wouldn't use them. Bone idle? Moi?

Hi, got something in common, haven't been able to do my plot either as it has been frozen rock solid too! I always find bribery works to get Mr Miffy and son up the lottie, like a flask of tea and a firkin, works everytime(firkin is slang for a fn big bit of cake!!)Mr H's expression not mine!
