  • Hi! Newbie (with questions) and happy to be here!

    Hi there!
I'm 24 and live in Wiltshire, keen grower of all things edible!
We moved to a flat (*sigh*) about a year and a half ago and I miss my garden!!!!! I grew up surrounded by Mulberry and Medlar trees and now all I can see is a main road
There is a small strip of grass which is fenced off from the road and right outside our (ground floor) flat - and we have some space in our open porch.
There is a small border (full of Lavender) by the fence.
How successful is it/have people been growing veg and starting fruit trees in pots? I'd obviously move them when we get a more permanent place, but i'm keen to get growing again and not sure what would and wouldn't work?
Also just generally interested in saying hello to everyone!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for reading!

hi & welcome to the vine, theres loads of things you can grow in pots, do a search if you want advice on particular stuff..carrots/spuds/beans/toms/etc etc can all be grown sucessfully, fruit trees i would have thought would depend on how long they are going to be in pots, but there are dwarf varieties available

      Hi and welcome.

I'm new to all this too. Beds dug but Polytunnel not built, but I've a good amount of large tubs that I'm planning to grow spuds, carrots, toms, peas and chillis in.

Good luck - I'm sounding more confident than I feel.

        Thanks for the replies!
Good luck with the new venture Glutton, sounds very exciting!!!! Let me know how you get on when things start shooting?
Intrigued by the spuds in tubs, i might give this ago. My neighbour very successfully grew butternut squash in large terracotta pots, not only visually stunning but excellent sized crop (and neverending!!)
Thanks to Hans Mum, I might give the beans a go!!

Hi welcome, have tried spuds in tubs/bags and they worked really well. We also grew tomatillos in bags and had lots of yummy fruit from them. Good luck with it all and welcome to the vine.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

Hi Ragged Diamond and welcome. What about growing outdoor cucumbers in a tub. I grew some outside my kitchen door this year (Marketmore) 1 plant per bucket (black florist type) and had enough to last all summer. Salad leaves, radish and herbs also. Mmmmm and strawberries my favourite! Good luck
