Hi - I am new to the forum, not really new to vegetable growing, as in the past I have had two allotments in different places, and a reasonable vegetable garden at home; but I have a problem. Work and life takes me away from home for certain critical periods during the year: Xmas, 3 wks Feb/Mar, Easter and about a month during July/August. I have given up allotmenting, and reduced the veg garden by introducing fruit bushes and a good sized herb garden that are manageable. Where I would appreciate some advice is the kinds of vegetables that I can grow to make effective use of the limited time I am around. At the moment I am still reasonably successful with spring salads, leeks and shallots, and broad beans - but would appreciate any advice on what else to grow given that I am often away - I have huge problems with all brassicas, weeds and insects do their duty while I am away.

    Thanks in advance

it must be the july/august break that does the damage?
Have you got nobody to water the plot for you while you are away?
Everything is established by then so watering must be the major problem?

Watering is a problem, and so is weeding. It's difficult to find someone who can look after the garden for the whole of the summer. Perhaps I should try harder!
