Hello there

What a fantastic forum. I stumbled across it while googling for advice on growing rhubarb. I shall have to try the magazine as well.

Though having had a garden for many years I hadn't tried vegetables until last year. I've only a small garden so I tried a few things in pots. The potatoes were great, really easy. But they were my only success - the slugs throughly enjoyed the runner beans and the beetroot and the carrots were never seen again. Even the lettuce in the mini greenhouse were spindley and weak. Had better luck with herbs fortunately.

This year I thought I'd try potatoes again, and have a go at rhubarb and onions from sets. Fingers crossed.

I shall be asking loads of questions so apologies in advance.

I had the same trouble with lettuce as you did so gave up with trying to grow them . Still, plenty more other things to try growing!

Hello greysquirrel and welcome!! I think everyone had trouble growing some things last year and the slugs were definitely out in force!! As Flummery says, fingers crossed for a drier year!

Welcome to the Vine Greysquirrel. I see you weren't happy with the lettuce in the mini greenhouse. Maybe the greenhouse was the problem. Lettuce likes to grow quickly in relatively cool, damp conditions and likes a bit of shade. It's tougher than you think. Some of mine stood well into the winter with no protection and I've got some on the go now. I'd give it another go.
