  • Can I grow a container fig against a wall?

Hi. I really fancy growing a fig tree against my south-facing brick wall. Trouble is, there is no soil near, as it is on my patio.

I would love to place a container grown fig against the wall and spread it around! Do I need a special type of fig for this (I was thinking of Brown Turkey)?
Also, I see most information about this mentions figs in containers, or wall-trained figs, but not both.

Can someone tell me if they have done this, and is it OK?
How is it pruned, and what happens about repotting (which clearly can't be done if the fig is fixed/trained to the wall??

    All help very welcome!

Hello Fizzy - where are you in the world? It might help also to add your location so any advice can be tailored to your whereabouts.

As you may have read already, figs do very well with some root restriction and don't object to being in pots. Can't really answer your question about combining that with wall-training, but sure another Grape can!

    Welcome anyway. x

Figs in pots are fine (Brown Turkey will be fine) and can be tied into eyehooks in the wall easily, you will have to train into a fan (you might be able to buy one partially trained but more £).
Only advice is that it will get really hot and baked so get a big container and water lots! We had one in a massive old metal water tank out the loft that worked well.

Bazza is a wizz with figs, hopefully he'll hop along and advice...

I'd say yes too. My Dad has two in pots, sunken into the ground to preserve moisture, and they are thriving. They aren't fan-trained, but I wouldn't see a problem, after all gardeners have been fan-training trees for years.

          Good luck - and welcome!
