  • Hello from Colchester

Just wanted to say 'Hi' to everyone.

I'm a complete novice (although I did have a veggie patch when I was a kid!)

O/H and I moved to Colchester about a year ago, it's our first house and we have a garden at last.

The garden is in a bit of a state and budget is limited but I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in and growing some veg. I've just put up a little tubular steel and plastic type greenhouse and I'm so excited!

Stumbled on this forum and it seems great! Really looking forward to learning from others and hopefully contributing (although I'm not sure what I can contribute yet!)

    Bye for now,

    Vikki

Hi there Vikki - welcome to the Vine. Loads of useful stuff on here. As for what you can contribute. . . novice questions turn up some of the best advice, so never be afraid to ask - we all benefit!

Hi and welcome - I was born in Colchester, it's a great place. Escaped out to the 'sticks' when I was four, but still pop back occasionally.

Good luck with the garden, and feel free to ask questions if you can't find what you want using the search facility. Don't ask me though - I know nothing lol

Welcome to the vine Vikki...although there's lots of lovely contraptions you can buy if money is no issue,a lot of us are gardening on very tight budgets.I'm sure you'll come across lots of money saving tips...& maybe come up with a few of your own!
Any ideas yet on what you plan to grow?

Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone!

I haven't had much time since I registered. Work is so busy atm that I'm lucky if I can manage a few hours of a weekend but I'm still very excited!

I planted some seeds today... Aubergine, Courgette, Cherry Tomatoes, Chillies, Peppers, Butternut Squash and some early sprouting Purple Broccoli.

I haven't prepared any beds yet and I still have a bit of clearing to do in the garden so I'm looking for things I can grow in tubs at the moment. I'm trying not to go over the top and plant loads of each but there is a thriving freecycle community in Colchester so I can always offer any extra seedlings/plants if I do manage to grow any!

I've got sooooo many very basic questions buzzing round my head so I'm going to go and have a search of the forum to see what I can find.

Lo vicki welcome ! , the closest link I can claim to your home town is im a member of the Colchester Poultry Club . I too am a freecycler and like to put in as well as collect ! . A lovely lady gave me some Jerusalem artichokes ( I love them) and some raspberry canes. Now I have my small greenhouse I'll be looking to give afew plants to my fellow cyclers , as opposed to the fridge freezer and fridge I have given out so far

It's a lovely friendly community here

                          Enjoy
