Hello from Kent

Hi everyone

I am just getting started turning a large seaside garden into part allotment and learning how to grow salads, veggies and herbs.

All tips welcome - I am enjoying reading the posts inbetween all the garden chores.

Anyone else in Kent?

Hi Barleysugar and Maytreefrannie (i wonder how we come by our names?)

I am in Sandgate near Folkestone. The garden is steep, rising in levels and overlooks the sea and France in the distance. There is lots to do in the veg and flower areas but I am getting there slowly with help from my OH. We still need to terrace and make proper pathways up the very steep garden. We have a summer house at the top. so somewhere to rest awhile between jobs.

Its good to chat and meet people here, Kent, Ireland, Cornwall or Scotland all lovely places to make a garden.

I hope to chat to other like minded newbies here.

I'm in Cliftonville. Have just joined and am also looking to turn part of my garden into a veg plot. Am even thinking about getting some chickens! Not much use for info though, as I'm a novice too, lol

hi bumbleB, i am from Tunbridge Wells, my garden is mainly grass ( for the kids ) so its the border that i use to grow, and pots, and window boxes and hanging baskets!! lol anything that can have a few holes in the bottom and big enough to grow stuff in basically!!! My chooks take up quite a bit of room so really can't take any more of the garden away from the kids.

I'm in N E Lincs and its been very cold, drizzle, fog, low cloud ALL day and i feel glum!!

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

I have thought about chicks too - just a thought at the moment as would have to look into all the pros etc of that, we seem to have foxes, lots of different birds (and seagulls) and also quite a few snakes! OH says they are slow worms but they seem quite large to me.

Thats the way that I started really - I have grown salad leaves in pots and some tomatoes in the past but hope to have a bigger crop this year.

It would be great to hear how you manage your chickens, how much is involved etc.

Tunbridge Wells is great, we just had my sons wedding there.

Oh dear, its been great sunshine here, managed to pot a few things on and give everything a water , still waiting for my courgette seeds to emerge but my beans popped through today.

I hope your gloom lifts soon, the sun shines over the humber bridge!

right eh hem (clearing throat)...
In the ground at the moment
parsnips - Countess seeds, Gladiator (overwintered)
Carrots - Flyaway seeds
Swede (overwintering experiment)
Beetroot - Bolthardy
Perpetual Spinach - overwintered
Pak Choi - destroyed by pigeons overwinter but putting on new growth
Broad Beans - Bunyard Exhibition (seeds)
Peas - Hurst Greenshaft (seeds)
Onion - Red Baron sets
Shallots - two varieties
Leeks - Autumn Giant (overwintered)
Kale - seeds
Horse radish - perpetual
Rhubarb - perpetual

For later in the season:
Pumpkins, Squash, Sweetcorn, Purple Sp Broccolli, Cauli, Brussels, tomatoes, radishes, more beetroot, more leeks, runner beans, sweetpeas, french beans, maincrop peas, courgettes, radishes, more carrots, brussel sprouts...I'm sure I'll think of something I've missed but you get the idea. We've only got a small lottie (4m x15) but its very productive, and I only grow a few plants of each each thing so we're not overwhelmed.

In the new kitchen garden we'll be doing some soft fruit too.
