We got our allotment last year and love every second of working on it, you will get used to the aches and pains which are cancelled out when you get the pleasure of eating something you have grown.

Thanks everyone for your kind welcome. If everyone in the world had an ounce of the kindness shown daily through GYO forums, it would be a much better world to live in. Rock on gardening!

I look forward to learning from other peoples posts the highs and lows of allotmenteering and will try to up-date you on my own progress. I think I am battling with couch weed at the moment, large clumps of tubers that seem imbedded in the soil but break under little pressure. So I am weeding an area 9m x 13m by hand having decided not to use a rotivator. Hopefully I will be able to erect some raised beds within the next couple of weeks to start growing my potatoes and strawberries together with an assortment of brassicas and root vegetables.
