Hi, im new here. I began growing my own vegetables last week and have just repotted my radishes. Still waiting for courgettes to appear. Carrots, onions, brussels sprouts and beetroot all seem to be growing well though.

a Hi there - i notice you have no lettuce on your list of croppers - lettuce is just about the easiest thing to grow for newbies so you may want to put a few rows of seeds in every couple of weeks for a continual crop. My first year all i grew was toms, lettuce and french beans.
Now in my second year and i have a greenhouse, 2 sheds, 80 feet of plots and a total of 431 plants from 31 varieties on the go!

Welcome to the grapevine - be warned - its addictive!

but then i would - i dont do things by half!

my next wee job is rooting out a huge lilac tree to put a cherry in its place - not sure what to do with the 3/4 ton of lilac wood from this one though... thats like a dozen november 5ths in one if i were to burn it.......

Lol! Not too bad a level of crops, but I bet we've got you beaten, over 1000 plants already growing in the plots, with at least another 900 still to plant out (currently seedlings in the greenhouses, waiting planting out into the plots or greenhouses! As Mr D says, we arent allotmenteers, we're farmers!

And I bet Sewer Rat has us all beaten hands down!

Woah! blito and Mrs Dobby. You have hundreds of plants! I feel a little embarrased now, i only have 5 little seedling trays and a 3 teir mini green house But even they produce quite a few veggies.....especially if your very new like me and put too many seeds in a tiny individual square and some squares of the seed tray have 15 radish shoots in them i know it doesnt really sound like it but its going well lol. When i re-potted my radishes i only managed to get 4 squares of a seed tray in 3 troughs!! I think i still have alot to learn about this gardening business.

Nothing at all to be embarrassed about Kasbar! You've only just started, and sounds like you are going great guns atm, so keep it up!

We started with a walk in plastic greenhouse and a few pavers lifted in the back yard, then soon after a full sized allotment, 6 months later we were offered a second half plot (as they hadnt a waiting list at the time), 6 months after that we got the full sized plot next to our first one (so gave up the half plot), add in a couple of freecycled greenhouses, and thats pretty much where we are at now, only 2 1/2 years after we started in October 2006!

We knew virtually nothing when we started, but the experience and help of loads of folk on the vine helped us find our way to growing most of our fruit and veg for ourselves! Without the advice and help from fellow grapes we'd probably have struggled a lot more than we have and possibly given up, so dont be afraid of asking questions, there are no dumb questions, only questions you're afraid of asking for fear of looking silly, and tis better to look silly for a few minutes than to remain ignorant or a fool for the rest of your life!

Hope you enjoy a bumper harvest and have as much fun on the vine as we have!
                        Blessings

Awww thanks thats very encouraging. I would love to have a propper veg plot rather than containers. but there are no allotments around here. Me and my boyfriend are looking at buying a house hopefully within the next year and a garden big enough for a veggie plot is a must. You never know he may get involved too once the space is his own lol.
