Hi - I have enjoyed browsing through the forum and have learnt a lot but still have some questions to ask....
We live near Glasgow in a semi with a reasonable-size garden. I have been growing veg with mixed success for years but feel I could do better. A few years ago my OH made me three raised beds which made a huge difference. Encouraged by their success he has just added a fourth bed, bless him. The beds are all about 4' x 7'.
I like to grow potatoes, courgettes, PSB, kale, leeks (never do very well), swiss chard, lettuce (lots!), beetroot (don't do well), peas and runner beans. The deal for getting the extra bed was that I would try carrots again -- I hate fiddling with them only for them to succumb to carrot fly, but I will try some of the techniques posted here.
The soil is quite heavy clay, but years of adding compost have produced a very nice texture in the older beds.
There is no room for a greenhouse apart from one of those little mini plastic ones, and we are nearly 200' high so I think the warming effects of the Gulf Stream have blown away before they get to us!
Whew - that was a bit long. Sorry! I am looking forward to being a bit more organised about my gardening and picking up useful hints and tips here.
