hello everybody!!
I am new to this grow your own veg malarkey which appears to be the fashionable thing to do nowadays. I am very fortunate in that i have fair sized back garden in which to grow my own. I have been cultivating dandelions in my lawn for years and so thought doing a bit of veg wouldn't be too hard. Amongst family I have been threatening for a few years to grow my own. My inspiration.....
I once popped into my local tesco express for 1 onion. I bought 1 onion which was individually barcoded and the country of origin was Chile. I just thought that this was simply wrong. Why did I have to buy one that had originated in Chile when here I was surrounded by England's green and pleasant land (well! Greater Manchester!). I didn't really give much deep thought to the airmiles and the environmental impact that that 1 onion may have caused it just simply felt that it wasn't right at all. My other inspiration is that the largest portion of cost of my weekly shop goes on fresh fruit and veg.
Anyway for a few years I kept boring friends and family about how I was going to start a veg patch and never actually doing it!!
Then one day about 8 weeks ago my mother in law bought me 6 bell pepper seedlings much to my pleasure. I found some old potting compost in my shed and some old plastic plant pots, lovingly planted them and since have been quite thrilled at watching them grow in my conservatory. I have since added tomato plants and chilli plants in my grow bags. Inspired and in a fit of energy
a few weeks later I deforested a small portion of my garden and have since planted onions, carrots, lettuce, garlic and a sunflower.
I haven't really got a clue as to what I am doing but as my missus pointed out its only cost about 1.50 odd each for packets of seeds so that if they do not take i haven't lost agreat deal. So it really has been a case of sow and hope!!
My onions are sprouting forth, carrots are being shy and my lettuce was gobbled up by an armada of slugs as soon as the little seedlings emerged from the soil!!
The other day after watering my plants and monitoring growth, I said to my wife:
" You've known me for a few years now love and have seen many fads of min e come and go. Do you think this is just another fad?"
To which she replied, "Having just seen the childish grin spread all over your face as you were tending to your peppers, I've a feeling you could be doing this for many years!!"
I hope she is right. I think I have been bitten by the bug and besides it is filling the void left by the end of the football season!!
Hope this intro was of some mild entertainment and that you will all accept me into tour green fingered world!!!!
