  • Hello from Sunny Devon(Not)

    Hello
I have only started veg gardening this year and am so pleased to have found some other people to talk to, quite frankly all my friends are bored rigid with me talking about my lovely carrots and how excited I got about REAL potatoes in the earth!!
I live in North Devon where it has rained solidly for weeks now and live near a stream(slight exaggeration - more like a trickle really) where ducks rule the roost and I am having real trouble keeping them off my veg -in fact they have eaten all the lettuces and all the baby broccoli, grrr!!
I have had some success, my strawberries were lush, my raspberries were sharp, my lettuces were eaten by ducks, my courgettes are very small, my cucumbers non existent, my potatoes good, tomatoes coming on, sweetcorn looking tall, melon dying, pumpkins are a surprise(don't remember planting them at all?), pepper got flowers, onions brilliant and garlic not ready yet but I remain hopeful and optimistic and have decided talking doesn't help them at all -may try rock music next year to get then going, what do you think?

Hello Nicky and welcome to the Vine. Oh I still miss Devon, I was born in Plymouth and lived near there for the first 25 years of my life. Exiled now to Suffolk

              Hey Nicky!
Welcome to the vine from a relatively new grape
It sounds like you are doing great with your veg growing! and it wouldn't be as interesting if everything grew perfectly and didn't get eaten by some other chancer before we get to them
I am not in Devon yet, but we just had an offer accepted on a house in East Devon, so the net around you could be closing fast!!!

No chance Nog. I spent part of my childhood living on South Dartmoor ... all I remember is endless days of rain, rain, rain.
I did learn to knit & cook though, being indoors a lot.
