  • Me and my daughter start growing veg

We starting late last year with potatos and got the bug. so we decided to do potatoes, strawberrys and tomatoes. we went to the garden centre to buy some bits for them and landed up buying carrots, beetroot, spring onions, sweetcorn, herbs. and some mini apple trees. we only went for pots for the strawberry and all of a sudden realised that we needed a lot more ground for the veg we brought. So we got the other half to build some raised beds.
The garden look very green and full compared to the bad grass we had before.
trying to learn the basics from books and internet is not so easy and they always assumed we know what we know what we are doing and we know what to expect from each plant, lol
spring onoins did well and taste good, beetroot we harvested some to early but the ones we left are looking better and hope to find out this weekend. sweetcorn very tall and from what I have read are doing well. strawberrys are starting to turn red, tomatoes lots of fruits and look forward to them truning red. carrots not sure if they are going to well, the ones we have had are split and small.
Is there a gardening book for dummies I think we need one.

Its a interesting time waiting for things to happen my daughter and I every day look and see the changes.

    greenhouse next lol.

Welcome Annlin. There are loads of threads on good books, but my recommendations are; 'The Vegetable and Herb Expert' by Dr Hessayon, and 'The Allotment Book' by Andi Cleveley, the first is a bit old fashioned, but has loads of info and (more importantly) pictures of pests and diseases, the other one, although it has the word allotment in the title, is great for all veg growers and is a very gentle, non-scary introduction, with sumptuous photography which makes it a good read on a wet winter's afternoon.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Annlin, why not go to the library and have a browse around.
You may also pick up some garden books in the charity shops.
Starting up can be expensive so maybe you might save yourself a bit of cash this way.
Good luck to you and your daughter.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Try your local library first, then if you decide you need to buy you will at least know what to look for. Where do you garden? You can add your location to your profile - a town or county will do fine. Good luck
