  • Hello all 8D

Hi, im new to the site, new to gyo (but loving it and doing better than expected) im based in Jersey, Channel islands so got the good weather and long sunny days

I have my own patch, 25m x 4m in a field in one of the northern parishes of the island. This is my first year as a grower so ive tried growing as much diversity as poss to get a good feel, see production results, grow times etc so i can try and plan a little better for my planting for next year.

Some things have done very well, like peas, courgettes, carrots, potatoes, runner beans etc, others have failed totally, like leeks but its all a learning curve, and ive even got friends interested for next year

Hi JJ and welcome to the vine! As you say it is a learning curve. This is my fourth year and I still have successes and failures. The thing is not to give up as there's always next year!

          Hi JJ

Welcome from a fellow channel islander. There's a few donkeys and crapauds on this forum. This is a fab site and I have gleaned so many useful tips.

Oddly enough my courgettes have been a bit rubbish this year but my leeks look great at the mo, its a funny old world

...is that a 'Channel Island' saying? Its a new one on me thats for sure .

Welcome to the vine JJ, we offer advice freely and accept it gladly here. Sounds like you're going great guns already. Did you grow your leeks from seed? I really struggle to get anything decent from leek seeds, so I opt for buying little plantlets from Suttons, it costs quite a bit more (think it was about £10 for 50 plantlets this year, if memory serves me correctly, although I actually received a lot more than 50 plants thats for sure) but I get far better results in the long run and its still cheaper than buying them at the supermarket!!
